About Us

The Institute for Green Science is dedicated to the intellectual growth and technical training of a new generation of ethically aware professionals who understand and practice sustainable science &mdash from the molecular level on up. We are a center for basic research and creative educational programs aimed at accelerating the invention of new, green technologies designed to aid the evolution of a sustainable world.

Mellon Institute

The Institute for Green Science was originally established in 1998 as the Institute for Green Oxidation Chemistry at Carnegie Mellon University's prestigious Mellon Institute. We are a research and education center focused on three major goals:

  • The expansion of a new generation of scientific leaders trained to change the way science meets the challenge of creating a sustainable civilization.
  • The creation of a first-of-its-kind website designed to accelerate that effort by making college and graduate-level green science courses freely available to students worldwide.
  • The development of interdisciplinary research standards and technologies that will lead to green, but practical, technological solutions to the problems we face.

We also believe in educating the general public about the crucial role that green science and ethical scientific thinking has to play in evolving an advanced and truly sustainable world economy.

In addition to the innovative, online curriculum available on this website, Terry Collins &mdash and others at the Institute &mdash teach graduate and undergraduate classes in green chemistry at Carnegie Mellon University. We invite lively debate and discussions about important sustainability issues, invite renowned lecturers to campus, and reach out to children and high school students to explore green scientific methods. To learn more about these efforts, please visit the Sustainable World section of this website.

This website extends that tradition and acts as a virtual place where thinkers, students, researchers and the public from around the world can explore and debate these critical issues.

Our Vision
The Institute for Green Science will work with scientists, students and learning institutions, business, and government to provide society with the critical understanding and transformational thinking needed to build a sustainable civilization. We believe this requires taking a systemic approach that integrates multiple points of view and draws on the strengths of fields both within and beyond science.

Our Mission
The Institute for Green Science trains students and researchers to think creatively about sustainability and to deliver effective, ethically sound, science-based products and processes to solve real-world problems created by today's unsustainable practices.

Our Research
The Institute for Green Science focuses on the study of catalytic oxidation chemistry through the design, mechanisms of reactivity, and applications of TAML activators which are highly effective molecular mimics of peroxidase enzymes. For more details, visit http://www.greenscienceinstitute.org
